October 12, 2017 School Board Minutes

The Northwood-Kensett Board of Directors met in a Regular Meeting on Thursday, October 12, 2017 in the Elementary Media Center at 7:00 P.M.

 

Members present: Roger Harris; John Anderson; Larry Hovey; Cindy Pangburn

Members Absent: Susan Kliment

 

(4-0) Approved the agenda; September 14th board minutes; Financial Reports for September; October bills for payment

 

Recognition of Visitors:  

Sheriff Dan Fank gave an overview of plans to implement an emergency response program for school safety, “I Love You Guys”.   Drills will be conducted throughout the school year.  Andy Grunhovd has been named our School Resource Officer and will spend approximately 5 hours per week in the district starting January 2018

 

Adjourn the meeting at 7:13 pm

 

Proceeding with New Board

 

Supt Crozier called the meeting to order at 7:14 pm

 

Official Election report was reviewed.  Elected for the offices of Director at large for a 4 year term were Roger Harris and Susan Kliment

 

Board Secretary Athey administered the Oath of Office to re-elected board member Roger Harris

 

(4-0) Elected Larry Hovey as President and John Anderson as Vice President

 

Board Secretary Athey administered the Oath of Office to newly elected President Hovey and Vice President Anderson

 

Supt Crozier turned the meeting over to President Hovey

 

Reports

Doreen Cordle, Title I reading teacher, gave an overview of the Title I reading program for K-6 students.  She works with students on their reading skills in small groups throughout the school year. Jordan Smalley, Reading Recovery teacher, gave an overview of the Reading Recovery program for 1st grade students.  She works 1 on 1 with students for 12-20 weeks

           

Elementary Principal: 1) Handbook modification to include DHS guidance on head lice  2) Fire Prevention Week with NVFD here on October 13th and kindergarten trip to fire barn  3) School Bus Safety Week is Oct 16-20 with an evacuation drill scheduled for Oct 20  4) Fall conferences Nov 2nd & 6th from 4-7:30  5) Iowa Assessments Reports from Spring 2017 testing

 

Secondary Principal: 1) Veteran’s Day Assembly guest speaker is Minnesota Air National Guard’s Brigadier General Sandra Best, Nov 10th at 2:45  2) Replacement of state championship sign and repairs to foundation will be done to repair damage caused by car accident. 

 

Kimberly Odegaard gave an update to the curriculum cycle.  Due to recent update of Social Studies standards, new Social Studies curriculum scheduled for 2018-19 will be delayed to 2020-21.  New Science curriculum will be explored and implemented in 2019-20

 

Superintendent: 1)  Certified Enrollment update:  508.07 students, increase of 8  2)  3 shop visits made to assist in planning the design of new Industrial Arts/Ag building; design phase of the project will begin in October  3) Tentative Bond Timetable established for sale of G.O. Bonds in March 2018  4) District Advisory Meeting Oct 19th at 6:00  5) Emergency lock out drill scheduled for Oct 26th at both school buildings

 

Board:  1) Next Board Meeting is Nov 9th  2) IASB Convention Nov 15-16  3) School Board U workshops offered by IASB

 

Director Kliment joined the meeting at 7:40 pm

New Business

(5-0) Approved the time for regular school board meetings at 7:00 on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the Elementary Media Center

 

(5-0) Approved modified allowable growth and supplemental aid for the district’s negative special education balance in the amount of $138,408.95 for the 2016-17 school year.

 

(5-0) Approved the changes to the Elementary Handbook as presented by Mr. Costello

 

(5-0) Approved the addendum to WWA Architect’s contract to cover the Industrial Arts and Agriculture Building       

 

(5-0) Approved offering a Certified Staff Early Retirement Program for 2017-18 as presented by Supt Crozier with an incentive amount of $25,000

 

(5-0) Approved Nick Schiltz as a volunteer wrestling coach

 

Adjourned the meeting at 8:24 pm
