Update on School Closure 4/18/20

April 18, 2020

Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education announced yesterday that all public-school districts and nonpublic schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, and will continue to offer continuous learning to support mitigation efforts of the spread of COVID-19. This also includes the cancellation of spring sports activities.

While the Governor’s decision may bring disappointment, protecting the safety of our students and employees is first and foremost. The Governor’s announcement brings more decisions for the Northwood-Kensett school district to be made in the coming weeks. The school district will continue to operate in a voluntary continuous learning system through April 30, 2020, as the board has already decided. The board of education, with a recommendation from the administration, will decide whether to stay in the voluntary continuous learning plan, or proceed to a required continuous learning plan through the remainder of the scheduled school year. The district will also decide on how to determine grades and credit for students for the current semester. Details with specifications for activities like prom, graduation and driver’s education will be coming soon to those families.

Ann Lebo, the Director of the Department of Education, stated in the press conference on Friday, April 17, 2020, that a decision regarding the summer sports of baseball and softball will be made in May.
